Would you consider turning this into an op-ed for a major news publication? How differently students are taught our history depending on region/text book used ... June 19 is around the corner.
My level of ignorance is astounding. I would never have guessed there were such differences in textbooks between regions, and over the last few decades. I’m clearly from la-la land.
I must admit I was surprised myself. What does that tell you about the people who are advocating for certain biased versions of history to be printed in textbooks?
Some of the stories come from my personal experience, and some are stories I heard from others. After I read Lies My Teacher Told Me, I researched textbooks. I selected a textbook that was commonly used for the information about US history in high schools. I selected a 5th grade textbook and accompanying curriculum for Chance’s lessons.
Maddening! How can “historians” write such litany of, I don’t know how to say it, distorted truths? It’s almost “Orwellian-1984-esque” and this is in textbooks that students in this country, built ON slavery need to learn? I wonder what students whose ancestors were enslaved feel like when they read those things. It’s perverse.
To their everlasting credit, Mr. Bob Booker and Mr. Richard Holmes taught US History to me and other Burlingame High School students in a style which opened my eyes. Color me fortunate because each teacher matters to the max.
Thanks for the comment. All students should have teachers who open their student’s eyes. You were extremely lucky. I can’t say the same for my US history teacher in high school.

Thanks for the great idea. I will look into it.

I got caught up and am enthralled with the developments. Did you use a few examples from your experience at Village School? really tough.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree it is perverse. It whitewashes history.
